ScienceWorksForU.S. is a project of the Association of American Universities (), the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities ), and The Science Coalition () to demonstrate the tremendous impact that federally funded university-based scientific research has on the nation and on the lives of all American, particularly the role it plays in improving health and spurring economic growth.

AAU, APLU, and TSC collectively represent more than 200 of the nation’s leading academic research institutions.  We understand that putting the nation back on firm fiscal footing requires a balanced plan to reduce budget deficits, stabilize our debt, and spur economic growth and job creation.  Sequestration, the across-the-board spending cut scheduled to take effect on January 2, 2013, is not the tool to achieve this.  It will blindly force cuts in productive areas like research and education, while not addressing other areas that are a disproportionate draw on the nation’s resources.

Federal support for scientific research laid the foundation for the dramatic expansion of the 20th century U.S. economy and is an essential component of any plan to ensure the nation’s long-term fiscal health.  Scientific research, conducted at universities across America, is the foundation on which the United States will improve energy efficiency, reduce dependence on foreign oil, deploy 21st century technologies, combat disease, and help bring down the cost of health care. In many communities across the country, research universities also are the largest employers and a vital component of the local economy.
